Honda's dealer-installed accessories increase popular cars' personality, functionality

Honda is using factory accessories to transform volume vehicles into cars that serve individuals instead. The 2010 Mugen Accord directly employs the expertise of Honda's Japanese in-house accessory arm to create a more expressive midsize sedan. Unlike last year's Mugen Civic Si, the Mugen Accord is sold as a dealer-installed accessory kit instead of a pre-assembled vehicle trim level. Though the Mugen parts list doesn't include any performance enhancements, aero tweaks include a pre-painted body-color grille, a ground effects kit with subtle ductwork in the front bumper, and 18-inch multi-spoke wheels. The entire kit will cost $6,560, plus the cost of installation. Mugen Accord parts will be available at Honda dealers starting November 11.

Displayed in the shadow of a 1971 N600 and a 1984 Mugen CRX prototype, the Civic Si Sedan HFP uses dealer-installed Honda Factory Performance 18-inch wheels, underbody spoilers and suspension components to grant the tuner legend extra street cred. The Civic Si HFP sits 15mm lower than its unmodified counterpart to lower its center of gravity and complete the look. HFP accessories for the Civic Si are available at dealers now.

Honda's Dog Friendly Element augments the base truck's wide door aperture and easy-clean interior with special parts designed to give canines easy access to comfortable travel. For a $995 premium over the Element EX, dogs can board via a ramp easily stowed underneath a cushioned dog bed. Both dogs and owners enjoy added protection while in motion thanks to a cargo-area kennel designed by seatbelt supplier Takata. The kennel's seatbelt-grade netting prevents dogs from distracting owners on road trips, and helps prevent injury to dogs and owners in the event of a frontal collision. Dog Friendly upholstery, floor mats and exterior badging will make these special Elements easy to spot when they reach dealerships on November 16.

Islandside treasure hunts often consisted of dragging his mother to car dealerships, where stumped salesmen scrambled for answers to questions only a five-year-old with an amateur engineering background would ask. Adam began writing an industry analysis blog at age 15, covered automotive and engineering beats for the University of Houston's Daily Cougar at 17, and graduated with a double-major in linguistics and print journalism in 2008. His mission is to reverse the commoditization of the car by empowering owner communities and championing for progress in the field.
